The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), which governs air sports across the world, has declared that Anna University holds the world record for hovering a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for the longest duration.

This record pertains to multirotor UAV in the 5 to 25 kg category and it is a first of its kind with no previous record history, according to an official release.

The attempt was made by a UAV developed by the Centre for Aerospace Research (CASR) at Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) functioning under Anna University.

FAI and Aero Club of India (ACI) representatives and other experts were present when the team attempted the record in July 2018.

The UAV achieved a duration of six hours, seven minutes and 45 seconds. After scrutinising the evidences and claims submitted, the FAI had recently recongised CASR as the bearer of the world record, the release added.

Recruiters will no longer be restricted by the geographical boundaries or reputation of the institutions to identify the best students for their companies. The students who want to get placed in IT companies need to clear artificial-intelligence based auto-proctoring tests in the future.

The test, which will gain prominence in future recruitment drives, was conducted for the first time by Cognizant along with Anna University in January.

“So far, auto-proctoring test was only used by IT product companies for jobs with higher packages. Now, Cognizant has successfully used it for mass recruitment. We expect all the IT service companies to follow suit,” said T Kalaiselvan, additional director, Centre for University-Industry Collaboration (CUIC), Anna University.

“The entire process went without any glitch. Only 22 of 10,017 students who took the test were disqualified for violations, which shows that the students have adapted to the new test,” Kalaiselvan added.

Companies like TCS are already conducting national level tests for recruitment. “The competition will be a national level. But, students from rural areas and those with limitations in language skills will also get an opportunity with this test. But they still have to clear the interview to get job offers,” a principal said.

“The web-based test will help complete the recruitment process within a month compared to the three or four months it takes in a conventional way. It also gives us an opportunity to look for talent across institutions,” an official from the Cognizant said.

News posted on https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/ai-based-test-to-play-key-role-in-recruitments-help-rural-students/articleshowprint/69138335.cms

Ramya Muruganantham, a computer science graduate from University College of Engineering in Ariyalur, cannot contain her excitement as she explains her first-ever experience of meeting numerous potential employers under one roof.
Ramya is one among the 400 freshers who participated in the Startups Job Utsav 2019, a job fair connecting rural and small-town engineers to startups, held at IIT-Madras’ Research Park, on Saturday.

Organised by IIT-M’s Incubation Cell (IIT-M IC) along with IIT-M Research Park and TiE-Chennai, in collaboration with Titan LeAP and Mahindra Pride Classroom, the job fair was aimed at connecting startups incubated at IIT-M to an untapped pool of engineering talent from tier-2 and 3 cities and towns in Tamil Nadu.

Over 40 tech startups and small businesses from the IIT-M ecosystem registered for the placements to grow their business supported by the under-utilised engineering talent from rural Tamil Nadu.

Colleges in Arni, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Panruti, Vellore and Thindivanam, which are affiliated to Anna University, participated in the event. The registered candidates were all pre-trained by Mahindra Pride Classroom on employability and life skills.

By the day end, around 250 students were shortlisted by the companies, which are now working to roll out offers based on further engagement with the selected candidates.

Startups hired for entry-level openings across the areas of mechanical, electrical, information technology, and others, with demand highest for those with software programming skills.

“For startups, hiring a right candidate is always challenge as they don’t have the bandwidth to reach out to large and diverse talent. On the other hand, tier-2 and tier 3 cities have a large number of talent pool,” a spokesperson for IIT-M IC told TOI, commenting on the first edition of the Job Utsav.

The Incubation Cell plans to conduct similar drives in the coming months based on requirement needs of its startups. “Next one would be focusing on domains like finance, HR, marketing and others,” the spokesperson said.

“Finding good talent is as difficult as raising funds as a startup, and the job fair was hence useful,” Srinath Ravichandran, co-founder and CEO, Agnikul Cosmos, a space startup incubated at IIT-M IC said.

Agnikul interviewed around 80 students and has shortlisted around five engineers to their team.

“It shows even students from tier-2 and 3 cities are willing to take risks and apply to smaller companies,” Ravichandran added.

Other startup founders TOI spoke to said the candidates were strong in their core skills, and while they were initially nervous, their stress eased up after subsequent rounds.

Ramya, who wants to become an entrepreneur herself in the long-term, attended interviews for three companies and has been shortlisted by a software startup. She counts the experience of interviewing with various tech companies as her biggest value-add from the sessions.

Posted in https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/iit-madras-job-fair-connects-startups-with-rural-talent/articleshowprint/69416531.cms

Three centres that bring together researchers from premier academic institutes, scientists from national laboratories, experts from industries and government departments to undertake research and development and come up with customised solutions in the field of solar energy and water management were launched on Friday.

The three DST Technology Mission Centres, set-up at a cost Rs 50 crores, were launched by Harsh Vardhan, minister for science, technology and earth sciences and environment, forests and climate change.

Speaking at the launch, the minister urged scientists working across various academic institutes and national laboratories to ensure optimal coordination among themselves and with researchers abroad, as it can yield better results faster. “There is a need for optimal coordination, as scientists benefit from each other’s experiences. The department of science and technology too has several science programmes that help and support scientists who want to conduct research abroad or within the country,” he said.

One of the three DST centres is a test bed for solar thermal desalination solutions established by IIT Madras and Empereal KGDS in Narippaiyur in Ramanathapuram district to develop customised technological solution to address water challenges in the arid coastal village. The facility is being set up at a cost of Rs 3 crores to demonstrate solar powered forward osmosis to produce good quality drinking water from seawater that would benefit approximately 10,000 people in the village, who are facing severe drinking water crisis. This customised solution would involve using solar energy partially to convert seawater into potable water.

Other two centres, include the DST-IITM Solar Energy Harnessing centre, which will focus on a wide range of research and technology development activities like silicon solar cells. The centre will also work on solar thermal technologies, energy storage systems and utilising solar energy to produce fuels. A network of researchers from IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, Anna University, ICT Mumbai, BHEL and KGDS would be jointly working in the centre. The DST-IIT-M Water Innovation Centre for Sustainable Treatment, Reuse and Management of Efficient, Affordable and Synergistic Solutions (SUTRAM) of Easy Water will undertake research and training programmes on issues related to wastewater management, water treatment, sensor development, storm water management and distribution and collection systems. Led by IIT Madras, eight partnering institutions like CSIR-CLRI and Indian Institute of Toxicological Research, Lucknow will be conducting research.
